3D Modeling 'The Bird Nest' with Form.Z

Did you watch the recent 2008 Olympic Games?, If you watched the opening and closing ceremonies, you must have noticed the modern Beijing stadium in which these events were being held. Nicknamed as 'The Bird's Nest' due to its striking structural design concept, it's one of the few great new buildings being built in China as venues for hosting the game. I'm using Form.Z for my 3D modeling and here i want to share this fantastic video tutorial on building the 3D model for the 2008 Olympic Stadium with my favorite tool.

Hospital Likas Cafeteria 3D Perspectives

These are just preliminary 3D perspectives that I've just finished today for the renovation and extension of the current Hospital Likas Cafeteria being proposed by the BTC Group. I've done other part time projects with them before and then I stopped for while when I was busy with my site works until recently they contacted me back to do this project. The idea is to enlarge the cafeteria dining area by extending both sides of the existing cafeteria. New roof and columns to be constructed while only minimal changes to the interior. Frankly, it's been dragged for quite sometimes already and I just finished it off today to be given to them tomorrow's morning. Hopefully they'll like it.

Bungalow House Design

Currently I'm working on 3 part-time design work and one of them is this bungalow house. Joined in with my friend actually to do the 3D rendering but end up, re-doing the whole design scheme. Apparently the client liked my layout thus we chose to proceed with it for the final submission. Only problem is that the 'middle man' seems to be more fussy about its elevation treatment rather than the client (since he's the one commenting so much) that I've revised the drawings a few times already before finally we arrived at this point- the latest elevations above. Well,.. not exactly as after meeting up with him again, still got a few comments here and there but due to dateline, he agreed not to change anymore. Luckily that's done,.. now I can concentrate on my 2 other projects..pheww..

New Toy - Canon EOS1000D

SIE 2008 - The Manikar

Continuing from my previous post about the recent SIE 2008 at 1Borneo, I just want to share one of the latest modern residential projects that caught my intention during the expo - The Manikar.

Designed by a Sabah own local architect firm with "simplicity is the ultimate sophistication" as its tag line, it claimed to be different from other residential projects in town by the developer - Wong Chik Lim Holdings Sdn.Bhd. The location is at Signal Hill, one of the premier location in Kota Kinabalu city area and it's a gated residential sanctuary with all the major destinations are located just nearby. At a glance, what strike me the most about this particular project is simply because of its overall strong streamline modern architectural concept (horizontality & verticality) which is clearly seen on all the houses' elevations treatment. Apart from the moderate single pitch main roof, none of the typical double pitch roof is visible in the design. The houses are basically consist of 4 types - grand residences, superior semi detached villas, semi detached villas and link villas with their own distinctive styles. In addition to the typical construction specifications, it's worthwhile to note that some of the extras being provided like the rainwater harvesting storage tank to be used for all W.C. only and Solar Thermal Hot Water System at all bathrooms are all elements of sustainable design which I think would be a great bonus/benefits for the house owners. Save up water and electricity consumption in the long run. It's refreshing to see that such modern and yet green approach is taken by the architect and developer alike in introducing such design here in Sabah. Hopefully more residential projects such as this architectural caliber will be built here in Sabah in years to come.

I was hoping to get a brochure from its exhibition booth on that day but instead I was informed to check the project's website. I was abit disappointed actually but after checking it out, all the info that I was looking for is there, so ok la I think. Only thing though, I noticed that sometimes some of these sales agents are not so "friendly" if you appear to be like some kampung people instead of the flashy rich people who are potential buyers to their eyes. The price? After being "told off".. :) .. I didn't bother to ask about the house prices but by judging from its location, floor area and architectural finishes, I assume that it would be around RM300,00.00 above or even more for the link villas alone.

Instead, I think that I should be paid by them for this "free promotion" ... :).

Semi-Detached House Renovation Proposal

I was rearranging stuffs on my computer at office this morning, trying to clean up most of the unwanted old CAD drawings from my cluttered hard disk, when I found this design proposal that I did for a client, actually a friend of my boss, a C&S Engineer consultant about two months ago. It's one of my favourite works to date so I just post here for your viewing pleasure and comments if any. The brief was to design something modern from inside out, meaning modern from its layout to its exterior look. As I said in my previous post, it's a trend nowadays in residential project and I was happy to be given a free hand on this one by my boss. It started with the 1st sketch proposal that I did earlier on and this one actually the 2nd proposal after amendment to its layout in which I also changed the main roof from being flat to a single pitch roof. Well, that might changed again depending on the final feedback from the client. As for now, all I know that he wanted the same design to be applied to his another housing project as I was informed by my boss which means that I have more monkey works to do in the coming months.

SIE 2008 and Bad Boyz Toys Exhibition at 1Borneo

Today is the last day of the Sabah International Expo (SIE) 2008 which is being held from 15th-19th at 1Borneo, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. According to the news, it was officiated by the soon to be Prime Minister, YAB Datuk Seri Panglima Mohd. Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak and I wasn't sure whether to come to see this or not since Friday as I was expecting myself to be quite busy this weekend. But anyway, since I was also feeling lazy about doing my 'extra' work at home, I headed to 1Borneo around 5:00pm to check out this event. Arrived at 1Borneo a few minutes a later and I just parked outside since the car parks were already full (I assumed) as I saw cars being parked along the road side. It was raining a bit when I left home and luckily it had stopped so I just walked from the open parking lot to the central atrium main entrance and to my surprise, it seems that there is also another big exhibition being held at the Central Atrium - Bad Boyz Toys Showcase. It' s a showcase of luxury cars, sport cars and big bikes alike. Not a bad decision I guessed for coming to 1Borneo after all. Lingered there for while then I went to check on the SIE exhibition located at Lower Ground Floor. Everyone was given a sticker when entering into the area and mine is No: 046815. A bit odd I think, maybe it's some kind of tracking system of the number of visitors I presumed. There were booths exhibiting and promoting properties, building materials and home furnishings around but I noticed that not really many visitors left since maybe it's already coming to its end. I was told by one of the sales agent that it closes at 6:00pm and it was already 5:15pm when I checked the time, so I quickly have a look around.

One of the good things of going to exhibition like this is that you can get a lot of info about the latest projects being implemented and construction materials technology. I for one always looking for current trend in architectural design in all these projects. What's being promoted by the developers would always give you an insight into what kind of design that property/house buyers looked for these days. And I'm happy to see that most of the designs and models being exhibited were all of modern concept or 'traditional' modern architectural concept. It seems that almost flat roof with big window panels is the theme nowadays for commercial and residential projects. Maybe we Sabahan have finally accepted this modern concept of living as compared to the image of a traditional kampung house that the big developers dare to promote such concept in their development since there is a huge market for it now here in Sabah. Though it was a last minute decision to come, it's worthwhile trip at the end.

For those students who are thinking of pursuing architecture programmes in Lim Kok Wing University, hold your horses and please check this information that I've found at PAM Sabah Chapter official website.

It's a letter from LAM (Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia) in response to the newspaper advertisement by Lim Kok Wing University of Creative Technology on its Bachelor of Applied Science (Architectural Science) apparently published on Daily Express-Monday, 26/05/ 2008.

If this really true, it's very sad that such propaganda is used just to get more students to enroll into their institution and pity those students whom were already cheated by this marketing lie.

Free Art and Design Magazines Online

For designers and architects alike, magazines has always been one of the fastest and easiest ways of getting info on the latest design trends and news, projects around the world and for some like me-inspiration. But being in Malaysia, unfortunately, most of these design magazines are imported from overseas so understandably the price also more expensive as compared to the local design magazines. I used to buy these magazines on monthly basis but as now you can find almost everything about design on the Internet, I only buy whenever I feel like it or more accurately for reference collection purposes only (can save money also). Anyway, it's always good to have books and magazines as design resources around you whenever you are looking for some inspiration as despite being easily available on the Internet, the real thing is always better than something virtual.

Or maybe I can be wrong with this great website that I've stumbled upon recently where you can read some free art & design magazines online just like flipping through the pages of the real magazine. What's more is that you can find other great magazines also on other subject as well.

A Blogger Blues ...

As a student , I used to hold true to these three principles (well..I tried my best):

Self - Discipline
Committed
Focus

which also my strength that got me through my degree in architecture. Likewise, working in an architectural firm, these same principles also applies in my works in ensuring that everything is done accordingly, from the acceptance/inception of a project, production of design concept until final design, preparation of tender and construction drawings, supervision during the construction period and finally completion of the project.

Slacking in any of the early stages would result delay in commissioning of project or worst facing termination by the client which would be a waste of time and effort for all the work you've done for. Not to mention the initial emotional stress and tension that you have to put up with the Boss 'creative instructions' during the early design stage and scolding for your incompetence in handling such project. Slacking during the construction period is less destructive because it's mainly on the contractor part. In my working experience, I did encounter such person but knowing too well of my own attitude, i.e. i don't condone scolding and intimidating others into doing their work, i did not stayed long in the company even though the other Boss was unwilling to let me go.. :).

Now when it comes to blogging, after 2 years of observation while lurking around the blogsphere, I must admit that it's the same if you're aiming to be a successful blogger.. I don't know whether there's any award as such, but I do believe that such recognition in this virtual realm must be worth something as most successful bloggers earn their living online. Honestly, such achievement would have been my next goal in life when I first started blogging, ( to free me from my monkey works.. :) ) but thinking back now, I was not really in the correct mindset back then and as my work also became larger than life, I've lost it and it just stopped when everything became a drag.

Maybe this time around it's a different story,..who knows.. but most importantly just enjoying it, regardless whether it's making money or not since it's also another ingredient for a successful blog.

Back for Good? ...

Well, what can I say?... I'm back here again at Blogger.. doodling my heart out?.. :)

Nahh.. I'm just trying to spend the extra time that I got while updating my CADVizion weblog by posting here. I'm changing it into a new custom layout after being 'dead' for months or years maybe. How long already I mingled in and out of this blogging thing?..2 years.. That's quiet some 'quality' time spent there and since then I've gained, learned and experimented much on my findings while learning or doing this blog thing. My achievements so far - Got a few blogs published, updated, then deleted and some still alive today : CADVizion and AWS Blog. The latter being a group blog actually but since no more activities so is the blog updates. Normally, I would delete it if no more updates but this one special since there's a lot of memories there and it's my best work so far i think. Done the blog template based on a free blog template with additional coding input to get some of the text/paragraph effects and finished it off with a beautiful background, an artwork from a friend (a group member). Guess things do changed when your life take a different path and basically that what happened with us, friends got married, took new profession or just plain busy like me, but we're all still friends, only that not so free as before like orang bujang.

So, am I back for good this time?.. Maybe yes and maybe not.. Though I'm away from blogging (the 'typing post' part), I'm still lurking around the blogshpere. I guess once you're into blogging, it's only natural to see what the other bloggers are doing and it's always refreshing to discover new things. Blogger for instance, has done much improvements since last time I started and there are many more interesting blogs being churned out every minutes, that at times it made me excited again..So, yes,.. maybe it's a good thing to be back here and hopefully this time I will stay on track.
